Grants for Senior Citizens

Many senior citizens live on a very limited income.  Their only source could only be from social security.  If unexpected events or even just the living expenses exceed their budget, then seniors would soon find themselves in financial trouble.  Fortunately for seniors, there are grants available that could potential help senior citizens financially.  The great thing about grants is that they do not need to be repaid like loans.  Senior citizens looking for grants to fund whatever activity they are interested in may be happy to know that there are hundreds of grants offered by federal agencies, large corporations, charities, and other foundations.  Over $40 billion in grants were awarded in 2007 by these organizations.

Federal grants are usually given to seniors for a specific purpose.  Other organizations may give grants which may be used however the receiver wants.  Federal grants typically help seniors in areas including education, housing, and nutrition.  Other organizations typically award grants along these lines as well.  Some federal grants that senior citizens can apply to include:

Capital Assistance Program for Elderly Persons and Persons with Disabilities – this grant provides money in order to meet the transportation needs of elderly people where there is limited or no public transportation.

The Foster Grandparent Program – This helps promote volunteer service for people 60 or older who are living on limited income.

Mortgage Insurance-Rental Housing for the Elderly – This helps seniors by providing them quality rental housing.

Other types of grants include the Home Repair Loan and Grant program.  These types of grants could help very low income seniors make repairs and improvements to their homes.  The types of repairs done on a home would include repairs to the roof, heating systems, electrical and plumbing systems, water and waste disposal, installing windows, screens, and insulation.  Basically anything that would make the home safe and livable.

Seniors that want to go back to school to get a degree may want to apply for the Pell grant.  This education grant is given for people with limited income wanting to pursue an education.  To get this grant, the applicant would have to fill out the FAFSA which asks for information regarding your income.  If you meet the qualifications you should be able to get this grant.

Before seniors apply for grants for senior citizens, they must do some research.  This includes finding out what the purpose of the grant is.  Organizations giving out grants will not give out grants to just anyone.  Seniors can check databases including grants.gov or other local organizations for finding the right grant.

Seniors who want to apply will need to write a grant proposal explaining their need for the grant.  It would be a good idea to get some help in writing a grant proposal.  There are services that offer help in writing proposals or you can go to the library and check out a book helping you to write proposals.  The main things to consider when writing a proposal is to make sure that you are concise yet detail on your plans for using the grant.  Make sure that you read the instructions for applying for a grant to ensure that you have everything that the organization has asked.  After you are done writing the proposal, you should submit it on time for evaluation.  If all goes well, you should be awarded a grant.

I am 61 years old man and I am a certified nursing assistant. In my experience in the business (15 years) I am finding that that 75% of the staffing is done by females caring for women and men. There are very few men caring for men. I am looking to start an agency exclusively caring for men. Are there any start up grants for seniors.

Have you contacted your mortgage company and asked about a modification? Under the newer laws, this may help you. I hope it all works out!
