Grants for Veterans

If you are a veteran, you would be eligible to apply for grants for veterans.  There are many different types of grants which can help you to pay for school, start a business, or buy a home.  The best types of grants for veterans are those geared towards paying for school.  Since the government is offering to pay for your tuition and other school costs, you should take advantage of this.  The G.I. Bill that was passed in 1944 allows you to get money from the government for tuition, housing, and $1000 a year for books and other materials.  Benefits are good for up to 36 months and payable up to 15 years after you get out of active duty.

Another grant that you could get which pays for school is the Pell Grant.  This is a needs based grant which you would have to fill out the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to get it.  Determination for the amount of money you get is based on your household income.  You have to apply for the Pell Grant every year because it does not automatically renew.

Veterans that want to start their own business can look into grants for veterans to start a business.  There are millions of veterans in the U.S. and the SBA and the VA offer resources for veterans to assist in starting or expanding their business.  The SBA has a program called the Veterans Business Outreach Program which provides business training and mentoring to veterans that want to start their own business.  The VA will also help veterans get in contact with programs in the area that helps veterans with financing, training, and other business related issues.  If you plan on buying a franchise ask about benefits for veterans.  Many franchises offer discounts and other incentives to veterans.  For example, Synergy HomeCare offers a 20% discount off the franchise fee.  You can check with VetFran for more information on which franchises offer benefits to veterans.

Veterans interested in buying a home can look at grants for first time home buyers.  Usually this type of grant will provide money for down payment and also to do some fixing up of the home.  The grants are based on financial need and income qualifications.  You can check with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for more information on how to apply for the grant.

With so many grant options available to veterans, there should not be any issues to get money to fund your endeavors.
